I have consistently been acknowledge by my managers, co-workers and others for my contributions to the success of our department's goals. Recently, I submitted my application for a managerial position whose basic duties reflect mine about 90% except for direct supervision over staff. The director who interiewed me this past week encouraged me back in November of 2004 to apply for jobs that would be announced early this year. I did just that and I, of course assembled my portfolio and prepared myself for the interview. The interview seemed to be going well, and I believed I answered the questions and presented fairly well. On Thursday of last week, I received an groupwise appointment for Friday. Believing that this was going to be the second round interview I prepared a few more items to show them. At the beginning of the meeting, the director told me that the HR Director authorized her to conduct a feedback session (which, after talking with the HR director, I found out to be untrue) with internal candidates who were not advertised for the advertised position. There were three people present at the first interview and this feeback session that included: the director, a manager from another department and a peer who also works for a different department. I was gracious and told them that I am always looking for ways to improve myself. After a while, I felt that the feedback was somewhat belittling as my peer stated that "If you want to get jobs in the future, you need to work on your presentation skills". I still grinned and bared the awkward situation until the end. Upon coming back to my department I spoke with my current supervisor to ask her opinion about the feeback session and how I felt that I was singled out since the Director who interviewed me I was the first and only person to go through such a feedback session. I have talked with our HR person and he did say that feedback sessions are fine and should be done in an informal setting and that peers who are the same level as me should never have been invited to attend this second meeting. I've talked to co-workers and other people that I know and they are unaware or never heard of such a feedback session after an interview? Can anyone else tell me of similiar experiences?
