Boss could use a lesson about opportunity cost of time, among other things

My boss is a perpetual pessimistic micromanaging control freak who never seems to practice what she preaches. Her style is just so very counter-productive and demoralizing to the department. Words of praise come out of her mouth once in a blue moon. When something is not going the way she wants it to go or work doesn't get completed on time for one reason or another, she is right ready to call you into her office for a 15-20 minute third-degree/reprimand session as though you were a child. She calls quite a few unannounced "emergency" staff meetings at the most inopportune times, which can last up to an hour and a half and yet accomplish very little. She'll make the decision for you that you will be attending various on-site trainings and seminars, nevermind whether it fits into your schedule or not. Also, she'll get on these tears where she'll leave a message on your voicemail with a laundry list of things for you to take care of. In spite of all this, she still seemingly wonders why your routine work isn't completed on time. When you, who are pulled in five different directions on a daily basis, tell her, "I'm doing the best I can.", the words just seem to go in one ear and out the other. [Big exasperated sigh] I just can't take it anymore and I'm ready to blow the joint and find employment elsewhere.
