Have you engaged in revenge in the workplace?

Interested in Participating in a Research Study on Workplace Revenge?

I am conducting a research study on revenge in the workplace. I am looking for people who have engaged in revenge at work and will volunteer to be interviewed about their experiences over the phone for about 30 to 75 minutes. All responses are confidential.

Revenge refers to actions at work that intentionally inflict harm to someone or something in response to some sort of mistreatment. Revenge behaviors include vandalism, sabotaging an individual’s work or reputation, and stealing from an employer. Revenge also includes more subtle things like giving someone the silent treatment, purposely wasting time at work, or purposely ignoring a supervisor’s instructions. The key is that your actions were motivated, at least in part, by the desire to “get back” at someone or something.

If you are not sure whether your actions constitute revenge, or for more information about this research study, please visit the website: http://www.bsad.uvm.edu/Research/inProgress/Studies/Jones.htm .

You are eligible to participate if you: (a) are over 18 years of age, (b) have engaged in revenge in the workplace at least once in the last five years, (c) have access to a telephone, and (d) have an active email account (or can create one) that is not provided by your employer. Provided that these restrictions are met, all individuals are welcome to participate.

If you participate in the interview you will have the option of having at least a 1 in 72 chance of winning $100. If you complete additional measures one month later (which will take about 15 to 20 minutes), then you will have the option of having at least a 3 in 72 chance of winning $100.

If you are interested in participating or if you want to learn more about the study, please see the website: http://www.bsad.uvm.edu/Research/inProgress/Studies/Jones.htm . Please do not contact the researcher until you have reviewed the website.

Thank you for your time. You participation is greatly appreciated.

Reply: I think that some forms of revenge are out of line, especially when it comes from another supervisor, not my own but he was there to help me either, this supervisor should have known that I was in a stressful situation, couldn't or wouldn't help me resolve the issue (completely work related) and then went behind my back to send in a nasty complaint about me which I was forced to sign/take ownership of . This stays on my work record for sixty days and prevents me from getting any bonus for that same period of time. I am sick of people with more authority to solve problems for the customers who have very complicated issues themselves, when I can't help, I would like to know that I can get help from higher up. THIS HAS NEVER BEEN THE CASE AND I GET FREQUENT TROUBLE FOR MY EFFORTS.
