    Suck Up

I work in my technical high school's restaurant. This past year when I was a freshman, there was a girl in my class that I couldn't stand. Everyone else thiought she was wonderful, but me and a friend of mine saw her for what she really was: a suck up. She would suck up to the head of our shop all the time. I remember one incident where after I had waited a pair of elderly women, they wrote me a compliment on my copy of the reciete. As I was showing this to the department head, the girl walked by and commented that SHE should have been getting compliments. Another incident took place when I was falling behind on one of my shop projects. The department head came over and told me that if I was stuck, I could use the girl's project for guidance. I said that in order for me to learn how to do the projects correctly, I'd have to make mistakes (I said this mostly because I was angry at his suggestion). I won the award for student of the semester, but when I asked why I had been chosen, my shop teacher said that had it been based on service in the restaurant instead of academic preformance, the suck up would have won. I was devastated when the award I had worked so hard to get, The Student of the Year Award, was given to the suck up. I didn't think it was fair since I worked harder than she did. Please give me advice on how to deal with this girl; I feel alone in this struggle.

Reply: You're not alone. Suck-ups can be very convincing. Maybe the teacher is being 'sucked in' by this suck-up. Try to remember this - At the end of any given day, when you leave your working and student environment, ask yourself if you gave it your all - did you give at least 100% of yourself to the job and assignments. If YOU can say without any doubt that the answer is 'yes' - then screw the rest. These 'sayings' are true: We wake up to ourselves - We can't fool ourselves. This is where self-awarness and self-confidence are born. If you're so inclined, (and I'm not preaching here), try to remember also that there is a greater being than us- when we're feeling all alone - that see's THE TRUTH in any situation. Keep up the great work you're already doing!!
