I have a coworker who believes she is the office manager even when the owner email us and said we do not have one if he were to appoint one it would be from outside the office. She has reported mistakes I make to the boss which make me look like an idot. I have suffered with headaches and had to go to the Doctor and he said they were tension headaches and gave me pills to help release the tension. No matter what I do or how hard I try to keep peice in the office she still feels the need to attack me. Can I do anything the put her in her place?

I WORK WITH 2 WOMEN WHO MAKE MY LIFE MISERABLE, BOTH GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO EXCLUDE ME AND TALK BADLY ABOUT ME BEHIND MY BACK, BOTH HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE WITH OTHERS IN THE PAST AND HAVE RECORDS WITH HR BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE BOSSES JUST WANT TO PRETEND THINGS ARE NOT HAPPENING. I HAVE CONFRONTED THEM AND WILL NOT PLAY THEIR MIND GAMES BUT IT LEAVES ME FEELING ALONE AND REJECTED. I CAN'T AFFORD TO QUIT MY JOB OR GO ANYWHERE ELSE TO WORK SO I WILL HAVE TO LEARN TO KEEP MY HEAD HIGH AND DO MY JOB THE BEST I CAN. I TRULY BELIEVE WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND AND ALL THIS BAD BEHAVIOR WILL CATCH UP WITH THEM. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE MYSELF STRONGER TO DEAL WITH THIS BEHAVIOR?

I am in a similar predicament. My boss is best friends with a worker who is in the office across the corridor. The worker and I have to keep our doors open. The "worker" makes comments about me (altho' he does not use my name) to the boss and the boss does not stop him. I have spoken to the President and this stuff stopped for a short while. I feel I cannot keep going in and complaining. I am on good terms with pretty much everyone else, and converse with them. I only say a minimum to the "worker" such as "hello" and "goodbye". Watching "the devil wears Prada" helps as Anne Hathaway's character didn't let the co-worker get to her and that gave her the upper hand. I would like other ideas.

Cilantro I'd suggest that if you have a rapport with your boss then just concentrate on building it. No matter that the worker is friends with the boss, people almost always form their own views on others by themselves. Dont feel that you have to directly get involved in shaping your bosses view of you for how your co-worker may be trying to shape it. Be diligent and have intergrity and that should win the day. Its not about getting the upper hand with your co-worker, as that will just lead to more resentment and problems, its about how you play the organisational game for how you best deal with your boss.
