I quit my job but now am in trouble

I was hired couple of months ago at a very good salary and a good sign on bonus. From week 1, I was told that I am not the right fit and 3 mos gone, my status/position at work was never announced. Almost third week in the job, apparently, my peer who was going to be promoted to be the head of the dept. said to me that I should look for a job, and I will not survive. So I quit, because I got sick of hearing this everyday and being upset everyday. There was no way in this co. to fight back except to quit. Now they want me to return the sign on bonus. I have spent that money on relocation to a very high cost city. Please advise .... Somebody, please....
